Lieutenant William Davis III of the United States Navy was awarded the Navy Cross for “Extraordinary Heroism” while serving as a pilot of a carrier based fighter squadron on October 25, 1944. “Flying through intense anti-aircraft fire,” the citation reads, “he made an aggressive attack on a Japanese carrier, first strafing it and riddling it with machine gun fire, before delivering a well placed bomb from exceedingly low altitude. After his pass the carrier was left burning and subsequently sank. The carrier was the Zuikaku, and is confirmed to have been the last surviving Japanese carrier that participated on the attack on Pearl Harbor. Lt. Davis was single handling responsible for the last direct reprisal for the horrible Japanese attack.
