8 years active duty
Medically Retired in June 2013
I joined the U.S. Army in April of 2005 and did my basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. I went to Fort Sill to do my schooling and was stationed there for 5 years. I deployed to Iraq from 2005 to 2006 and deployed again to Iraq from Early 2008 to Mid 2009 for 15 months. During my second deployment, I re-enlisted and added another 4 years to my time. When I re-enlisted I re-classed into infantry and was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia to do my training. There, as a E-5/ Sergeant, I was thrown into week 6 of basic training which certainly was “fun” to redo basic training all over again.
After basic training I was stationed at Fort Wainwright Alaska, and remained there for a year until I was deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. Six months into my deployment, while on mission, I stepped on an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) and ended up losing both my legs above the knees, my index finger on my left hand, and a few scars from the shrapnel.
After a few months of recovery I was able to use my prosthetics and was able to get my car fitted with hand controls that allowed me to be independent again. Four years after the accident, in 2015, I was married, and 8 days after our one year anniversary we had our daughter Audrey (first for both of us).
I currently live in San Diego, going to school for my bachelors in IT and am training with hand cycle and running on my blades. I plan to participate in marathons and cycling events.
